The Cell Project

Task1. The 3D Cell Model is of a basic animal cell and must include the labeling of all parts and functions for the following:
Cell Membrane: including labeling and describing the function Must include the phospholipid bilayer and membrane proteins Mitochondria: including labeling and describing the function Must include inner and outer membrane and show energy being released from here Lysosomes: including labeling and describing the function Must show one lysosome in action (breaking down old or unwanted substances). Ribosomes: including labeling and describing the function Must show a ribosome making a protein. Cytoplasm: including labeling and describing the function Use some substance to represent this fluidlike water solution that contains dissolved substances like oxygen, amino acids, glucose, ions, minerals, etc. Endoplasmic Reticulum: including labeling and describing the function Show the ROUGH and SMOOTH ER Show a newly constructed protein leaving the Rough ER Nucleus: including labeling and describing the function Show the nuclear envelope/membrane, nuclear pores, chromosomes (organized form of DNA), and nucleolus Golgi apparatus: including labeling and describing the function Demonstrate a protein arriving from the ER and being modified, packages, and secreted in a vesicle. Cytoskeleton: including labeling and describing the function 2. Write the paper on your particular cell Choose a type of cell to research (this is not the cell you will be creating a 3D model of): heart, skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, brain/nerve cell, skin cell, intestinal cell, pancreatic cell, liver cell, bone cell, white blood cell, stem cell, stomach, eye (retina cell), taste bud cell, etc. Use the day in the computer lab to answer the questions on the handout, "Research Day Assignment." Use the handout to type a two-page, 12 point font, 1 inch margin paper with an additional page for references using MLA format. 1st Page - description of your cell - what organ it is a part of? - the function of the cell? - what structures/organelles does it have / not have? - what is the scientific name of the cell? - what did you find interesting? - what are some diseases caused by this cell not working properly? 2nd Page - You are part of an advisory committee at the LAC+USC hospital. You have a patient who has the disease that you're cell causes when it does not work properly. Your task is to write: a) a summary report for the patient's school, describing what is happening to your patient and what will happen; OR b) a letter to the patient's parents, explaining what is wrong with your patient and why they might be behaving / acting in a certain way. 3. Create a stunning 3-minute presentation of your cell with your iPad. Using the rubric, record yourself and partner 1) explaining what you labeled as the parts of the cell and how you showed the functions 2) what you learned about the cell, and 3) a verbal report to the school / parent of the patient at your hospital (act and use props for extra points!) |
